Typical dishes of Ghent

Asparagus flamenca style

Asparagus is a very popular food in Ghent, but it is not grown all year round. And for that reason it tends to be somewhat more expensive at certain times, considered almost as “white gold”. The way to eat them in Belgium is “Flemish style”, with scrambled eggs, butter and oil. You have to come and try them, they are not cooked in the same way everywhere.

Stoemp

This typical meal is a mashed potato dish mixed with some vegetables that can be served as an accompaniment to other meals or as a unique dish by adding one or more meat sausages. It is very similar to a Dutch dish (Stampot), which share the same ingredients and is another typical meal that you cannot miss.

Waterzooi

This stew is not very traditional for many, but originally its main ingredient was fish because of the ease of fishing in Ghent. This dish is now also prepared with chicken.
