Begijnhof Kortrijk
Begijnhof is a charming little village in a knot of alleys within the old town. Located between the main groynes of the city, this area was sacked several times; especially during the period battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302. There are 41 houses that were built in the 17th century and you can distinguish the Mother Superior’s home by its double-stepped gable.
Broeltorens
Beginning in the 9th century, the Counts of Flanders built a castle and defensive complex in what is now the center of Kortrijk. All that remains of the medieval walls that defended it is a pair of circular sandstone and stone towers on each bank of the Oude Leie river. On the south side is the Speytorre placed to control traffic on the Leie. The other side of the water is from 1415 and was an arsenal.
Grote Markt
The main square is the historical heart of the city and was born at the end of the 19th century with the demolition of the Oude Lakanhalle around the bell tower. Before that, there was a loop of smaller squares here, each with flea markets with different products, such as food, pottery, fruit and clothing.
Historic City Hall
The historic Town Hall, another key point to visit. Its facade was completed around 1520. This is of a transitional style between Gothic and Renaissance and is also notable for its 14 niches on the second floor with sculptures of the Counts of Flanders. While you are there, take a look at the stained glass windows, the 19th century murals, the allegorical figures.
Shopping streets
Korte Steenstraat in the old town became Belgium’s first pedestrianized shopping street in 1962. Centered on this street, it is one of the largest car-free urban areas in the country. Stocked with most of the brands you would expect to find in a Belgian shopping district, as well as cafes, patisseries and bakeries. Since 2010, this has been upgraded on the east side to include stores such as H&M, Zara, HEMA, C&A, and MediaMarkt.
