Enjoy the local cuisine

Ypres is a good place to sample true Flemish fodder and the best is undoubtedly De Ruyffelaer in Gustave de Stuersstraat. The restaurant is kitschy and cozy both inside and out, with a wooden interior and an artwork fireplace and various antiques. Flemish dishes include pâté, various wild meats and many pork dishes; all cooked with traditional Flemish methods.

Tour the battlefield of Flanders

The organized tours available here include not only the battlefields themselves, but also the city’s museums and military cemeteries. Tour guides aim to balance providing information and facts to tour groups while remaining respectful and ultimately remembering the sacrifice made by those who lost their lives here.

Another historical site that was very important during World War I, is the man-made defensive position known as Hill 60. What will surprise you about the hill – after learning about the number of lives that were lost – is how small it is. During World War I the hill was moved between French, German and British troops.

Walk along the ramparts of Vauban

You can walk along the Vauban ramparts at the Menin Gate Memorial and continue along the canal, enjoying a peaceful setting and many benches along the tree-lined path. The walk is generally quiet compared to other places in Ypres and is a great place to escape the busy streets. The ramparts themselves date back to the 17th century and were used to fortify Ypres when it was just a town.
