Hasselt Ignites. Explore a city where history and culture fuse through cobbled lanes and cafes, and help Jenever de Bakker recover the secret recipe that filled Hasselt with the irresistible scent of spiced speculaas.
An outdoor scavenger hunt through Hasselt, run from your own phone and finished whenever you decide you are finished. Secrets of Hasselt turns the streets themselves into the game.
Because it is GPS-based, the game always knows which corner you are on and gives you that corner's riddle, puzzle or photograph. The answers are never on the phone; they are out in Hasselt, in front of anyone who bothers to look. What sticks afterwards is the part nobody tells you on a tour.
The route takes in Virga Jessebasiliek, National Jenever Museum and Het Borrelmanneke Statue, and the walking between them is where most of the finding happens — what you need is out there in front of you, never on the screen.
You also reach St. Quentin's Cathedral and Het Stadsmus City Museum. Everyone works out soon enough that the useful detail is never the obvious one.
A Self-Guided Tour of Hasselt That Asks the Questions
It delivers what a walking tour delivers — a proper route through Hasselt, and the story behind the thing in front of you — and removes the two parts people put up with: the commentary and the waiting. Here you walk, you look, you work it out. At intermediate difficulty most groups get most of it and disagree happily about the remainder. There are riddles, there is code-breaking, and there are photographs you would never have thought to take.
Planning a Fun Scavenger Hunt in Hasselt?
You have found one. It takes a minute: pick a date, open the link in your browser, start when you want. No printing, no hiding things in advance, no list to compile — the route, the riddles and the photo tasks are already laid out across Hasselt, roughly two hours and 3 to 4 km of walking. A single ticket at €19.95 covers four people sharing one phone. Anyone who has tried to build one of these knows how long that takes.
Who It Suits: Adults, Teams and Families in Hasselt
Adults. A scavenger hunt for adults in the sense that the puzzles actually resist you. Intermediate difficulty, riddles built on detail you have to go and look at, and two hours that hold a group that came out to enjoy itself.
Teams. A corporate scavenger hunt that needs no facilitator, no room booking and no scheduled start. Buy one ticket per four people, send the teams into Hasselt on the same route, and compare who found what. Running several groups at once is what turns it into a competition.
Families. The distance bothers no child, and the photo tasks are where the youngest players get ahead of everyone. The riddles end up being a joint effort, which is exactly why a group of mixed ages works here.
Couples and friends. A self guided tour with nobody to follow and nothing to keep up with. You choose the pace and the stops, and you come away with facts about Hasselt that would surprise a local.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Secrets exploration game work?
You book a date, get a link by email. At the starting point in Hasselt you open the game on your phone. It is GPS-based: it knows where you are, and each location holds a riddle, a puzzle or a photo task. Solve one and the next location unlocks.
Is this a walking tour or a game?
Both, and that is the point. It follows a walking route through Hasselt the way a self-guided walking tour does, and you pick up the history as you go — but instead of a commentary in your ear you get riddles to solve. Nobody walks in front of you holding a sign.
What do we need to bring?
A charged phone and shoes you can walk 3 to 4 km in. You get a link when you book and open the game at the starting point — there is nothing to print, nothing to hide in advance and no equipment to collect.
How long does it take?
Two hours is typical, over a 3 to 4 km route. There is no clock and no scheduled departure — you fix the day when you book and start whenever you want on it.
How many people can play on one ticket?
€19.95 buys one ticket, one phone and one to four people around it. Larger groups split across two tickets and end up competing, which most of them prefer.
Is it hard?
It sits at intermediate. What it asks for is attention and lateral thinking rather than local knowledge, and no riddle is obscure enough to end the afternoon.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes. The distance is ordinary walking for them and they are normally first through the photo tasks. Intermediate riddles mean the family works them out together, which is how it is designed.
Do we need to book a time slot?
No. You choose a date when booking, then start at whatever time you like on that date. There is no meeting point, no guide and no group to join.
What happens if it rains?
You play when it suits you and stop when it suits you, so a shower just means a coffee. No timer is running, and the route is exactly where you left it.
Will we actually learn something about Hasselt?
That is the point of this one. The riddles are built on the history, the characters and the odd details of Hasselt, so you finish knowing things most visitors never find out. If you would rather have a story than a tour, look at the other city games in Hasselt instead.

I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.
