Dive into Heraklion’s Myths and Mysteries. Wander through sunlit streets where ancient gods once walked, solving clues to help Poseidon reclaim his lost trident and uncover the secrets that still ripple beneath this legendary seaside city.

Secrets of Heraklion hands you the streets themselves as a puzzle. It is a self-guided scavenger hunt on your own phone — no guide, no group, no departure time.

The game reads your position, so each location arrives with its own riddle, puzzle or photograph to take. None of it can be answered from a screen — what you need is in front of you in Heraklion, in whatever happens to be standing there. You finish knowing a set of things most residents never picked up.

The route passes Koules Fortress, Heraklion Old Town and City Park Circle, and the walking is the game. The answers are around you rather than on the phone, and none of them look important until you need them.

You also reach “Kalinihta” Sign and Saint Titus Cathedral. Everyone works out soon enough that the useful detail is never the obvious one.

A Self-Guided Walking Tour of Heraklion, With Riddles Instead of a Guide

Think of it as a self-guided walking tour that asks you questions. You get the same thing a walking tour gives you — a route through Heraklion and the stories behind what you are looking at — but nobody is talking at you and nobody is waiting for the group to catch up. You walk, you look, and you work things out. The difficulty is intermediate, which in practice means most groups solve most things and argue productively about the rest. Expect riddles, code-breaking and a fair number of photographs you would not otherwise have taken.

Want to Plan a Fun Scavenger Hunt in Heraklion?

This is one, already built. Nothing gets printed, nothing gets hidden beforehand and no list gets written, because the route through Heraklion, the riddles and the photo tasks all exist — about two hours over 3 to 4 km on foot. One ticket is €19.95 and covers up to four people on one phone. It is the same evening you were going to spend writing clues, spent walking instead.

Who It Suits: Adults, Teams and Families in Heraklion

Adults. As a scavenger hunt for adults it has real bite — this is not a printable list of things to spot. The difficulty is intermediate, the riddles reward looking at what is in front of you, and the two hours hold up for a group that came to be entertained.

Teams. Nothing to facilitate, nowhere to book, no start time to enforce. One ticket per four colleagues, every group loose in Heraklion on the same route, and a comparison at the end. Several teams at once is what makes it a team scavenger hunt rather than a walk.

Couples and friends. A self guided tour with nobody to follow and nothing to keep up with. You choose the pace and the stops, and you come away with facts about Heraklion that would surprise a local.

Families. Children manage the walking easily and tend to win the photo tasks outright. Because the riddles get solved together, a group spanning three generations still functions as one team.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Secrets exploration game work?

At the starting point in Heraklion you open the game on your phone. It is GPS-based: it knows where you are, and each location holds a riddle, a puzzle or a photo task. Solve one and the next location unlocks.

Is this a walking tour or a game?

It is both at once. The route through Heraklion is the route a self guided tour would take and you learn the same things, except nothing is narrated — you get riddles instead of commentary, and there is no one at the front with a raised umbrella.

What do we need to bring?

Just a charged phone and comfortable shoes for 3 to 4 km.

How long does it take?

Roughly two hours across 3 to 4 km of walking. Nothing counts down. The date is set at booking and the hour is yours, so a group that stops for lunch just finishes later.

How many people can play on one ticket?

€19.95 buys one ticket, one phone and one to four people around it. Larger groups split across two tickets and end up competing, which most of them prefer.

Is it hard?

It sits at intermediate. What it asks for is attention and lateral thinking rather than local knowledge, and no riddle is obscure enough to end the afternoon.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. The distance is ordinary walking for them and they are normally first through the photo tasks. Intermediate riddles mean the family works them out together, which is how it is designed.

Do we need to book a time slot?

No — only a date. The hour you actually begin is yours, and there is nobody waiting: no meeting point, no guide, no group.

What happens if it rains?

You play when it suits you and stop when it suits you, so a shower just means a coffee. No timer is running, and the route is exactly where you left it.

Will we actually learn something about Heraklion?

It is the whole design. Every riddle sits on something real — the history of Heraklion, the people in it, the details nobody points out — so you come away with more than a visitor normally does. If a plot appeals more than a route, the other city games in Heraklion have one.

I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.
