I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

Does Auckland have a dark side?

Auckland is a young city built on old fire. It sits on a volcanic field with around fifty volcanoes, and the cones you see on the skyline are a reminder that the ground here was once anything but quiet. The city itself was founded in 1840 as the colonial capital, and Albert Park, near the end of our route, lies on the site of the old Albert Barracks, built in the tense years of the 1840s.

We do not tell ghost stories we cannot back up, and you will not find invented hauntings on this page. What you will find is a centre where old lanes, Victorian buildings and modern towers stand side by side, and where the streets take on a different mood once the shops close.

What do you see on the detective route?

The Sherlock Holmes murder mystery in Auckland takes you through the centre, from the Town Hall and Aotea Square up to Albert Park. Along the way you walk down Vulcan Lane, named after the blacksmiths who once worked there, cross busy Queen Street, pass the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and reach Emily Place Reserve, a small green corner of colonial Auckland.

The story is based on Sherlock Holmes. You question witnesses, collect clues and decide together who did it. The game runs in the free Loquiz app on one phone per team, at your own pace. It is a fun halloween Auckland outing for friends, couples, families with older children and colleagues.

How is Halloween celebrated in Auckland?

In New Zealand Halloween falls in spring, so 31 October brings long, light evenings instead of autumn darkness. Kids in many suburbs dress up and knock on doors for lollies, and costume parties are popular, but it remains a fairly low-key night compared with other countries.

That makes a game in the city a good fit: you are outside, you play together and the mystery gives the evening its spooky edge. Ghost Hunters, our ghost game, is coming to Auckland.
