I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

Which legend belongs to Lake Wakatipu?

The best known story here is a Māori legend about the lake itself. It tells of the giant Matau, who was set on fire while he slept. His body burned so fiercely that it melted into the ground and left a deep hollow in the shape of a sleeping figure, which filled with water and became Lake Wakatipu. Only his heart did not burn, and some say that its beat is why the lake gently rises and falls.

The town has a rough history too. Queenstown grew fast in the 1860s gold rush, when miners crowded the rivers nearby hoping to get rich, and many left with nothing. Walking the old streets at dusk, it is easy to picture that restless time.

Where does the detective route take you?

The Sherlock Holmes murder mystery in Queenstown starts near the main town pier and leads you through the centre to Queenstown Gardens. On the way you see St Peter's Anglican Church, the War Memorial and Williams Cottage, one of the oldest houses in town, with the steamship TSS Earnslaw waiting at the waterfront.

You solve riddles and photo tasks, talk to witnesses and decide together who the killer is. The game takes 1.5–2 hours and runs in the free Loquiz app on one phone per team. With the mountains turning dark around the lake, it is a lovely halloween Queenstown walk for friends, couples and colleagues.

How is Halloween celebrated in Queenstown?

In New Zealand 31 October falls in spring, so Halloween here comes with long evenings and cool mountain air rather than autumn darkness. Children in some neighbourhoods go trick-or-treating and there are costume parties, but it is a modest night overall.
