Unveil Budapest’s Secrets of Splendor. Step into a city of grand bridges, golden domes, and timeless legends as you join Count István Széchenyi on a quest to recover the lost Holy Crown of Hungary and restore the glory of a visionary city.

The streets themselves are the board and your phone is the only equipment. Secrets of Budapest is a self-guided outdoor scavenger hunt, played at whatever pace suits you.

The game reads your position, so each location arrives with its own riddle, puzzle or photograph to take. None of it can be answered from a screen — what you need is in front of you in Budapest, in whatever happens to be standing there. You finish knowing a set of things most residents never picked up.

The route passes St. Stephen's Basilica, Soviet War Memorial and George H. W. Bush Statue, and the walking is the game. The answers are around you rather than on the phone, and none of them look important until you need them.

Kossuth Lajos Square and Hungarian Parliament Building are on the list too, and the habit of looking up sets in on its own.

A Self-Guided Walking Tour of Budapest, With Riddles Instead of a Guide

It delivers what a walking tour delivers — a proper route through Budapest, and the story behind the thing in front of you — and removes the two parts people put up with: the commentary and the waiting. Here you walk, you look, you work it out. At intermediate difficulty most groups get most of it and disagree happily about the remainder. There are riddles, there is code-breaking, and there are photographs you would never have thought to take.

Looking for a Scavenger Hunt to Do in Budapest?

This is one, already built. Setting it up is a date and a link: book, open the link, begin when you feel like it. Nothing gets printed, nothing gets hidden beforehand and no list gets written, because the route through Budapest, the riddles and the photo tasks all exist — about two hours over 3 to 4 km on foot. One ticket is €19.95 and covers up to four people on one phone. It is the same evening you were going to spend writing clues, spent walking instead.

An Outdoor Scavenger Hunt That Works for Any Group in Budapest

Adults. Nothing about this resembles a printable list of things to find. It runs at intermediate difficulty, the riddles want things read properly rather than glanced at, and two hours passes without anyone checking their phone for other reasons.

Couples and friends. A self-guided walking tour that does not involve following an umbrella. You set the pace, stop where you want, and end up knowing things about Budapest that most people who live there do not.

Teams. One ticket covers four people, so a department divides straight into groups running the identical route through Budapest. No host to hire, no venue to reserve, no departure time. Put three or four teams on it together and the competition takes care of itself.

Families. The distance bothers no child, and the photo tasks are where the youngest players get ahead of everyone. The riddles end up being a joint effort, which is exactly why a group of mixed ages works here.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Secrets exploration game work?

Book a date and a link arrives by email. Open the link in your phone's browser. You start it at the first location in Budapest, and from there your position drives everything — each stop brings a riddle, a puzzle or a photograph to take, and answering it opens the next stop.

Is this a walking tour or a game?

Both, deliberately. On distance and route it is a walking tour of Budapest; on content it is a puzzle. The history arrives through the riddles rather than through a guide, and there is nobody to follow.

What do we need to bring?

Just a charged phone and comfortable shoes for 3 to 4 km. You get a link when you book and open the game in your phone's browser at the first stop; nothing to print, nothing to plant beforehand, nothing to pick up anywhere.

How long does it take?

Two hours is typical, over a 3 to 4 km route. There is no clock and no scheduled departure — you fix the day when you book and start whenever you want on it.

How many people can play on one ticket?

One ticket covers a group of 1 to 4 people playing on one device, at €19.95 in total. Groups larger than four buy a second ticket, which also lets them play against each other.

Is it hard?

Intermediate. Observation and sideways thinking do the work; you do not need to know the city, and nothing on the route is built to stop you permanently.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. The distance is ordinary walking for them and they are normally first through the photo tasks. Intermediate riddles mean the family works them out together, which is how it is designed.

Do we need to book a time slot?

No. You choose a date when booking, then start at whatever time you like on that date. There is no meeting point, no guide and no group to join.

What happens if it rains?

You play when it suits you and stop when it suits you, so a shower just means a coffee. No timer is running, and the route is exactly where you left it.

Will we actually learn something about Budapest?

That is the point of this one. The riddles are built on the history, the characters and the odd details of Budapest, so you finish knowing things most visitors never find out. If you would rather have a story than a tour, look at the other city games in Budapest instead.

I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.
