Netherlands: city games

A City Game turns a walk through a Dutch city into a self-guided game. You follow a route on your smartphone, solve puzzles at real landmarks and pick up the stories behind the streets as you go. City Games run in more than 50 Dutch cities, from Amsterdam and Utrecht to Maastricht and small towns such as Giethoorn, Volendam and Urk.

You decide when to start. Stop for a coffee or a museum visit and continue whenever you like. A game usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours and covers 3 to 4 km on foot, which makes it an easy way to see the highlights of a Dutch city in a single afternoon.

Exploring Netherlands

The Netherlands packs a lot of variety into a small country. The Golden Age cities of Holland – Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden and Delft – are built around canals, bridges and gabled merchants' houses. Rotterdam, rebuilt after 1940, shows the modern side of the country with bold architecture along the Maas. In the north, Groningen is a lively student city, while Maastricht in the south has a Burgundian feel with large squares and pavement cafés.

Distances are short and trains run often, so you can easily combine two cities in one day. Dutch centres are flat and easy to walk, but keep an eye on cyclists: bike lanes are everywhere and often run right next to the pavement. Need ideas?
