I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

How we check reviews

What brings the city hall into your walk?

Secrets of Alkmaar passes the city hall after Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk. The route also includes the Alkmaar Cheese Market, with stories about Waagplein and the old centre contributing to the exploration. Look at the city hall as a building along your walk, then consider how the current challenge asks you to engage with the city. Photo tasks and puzzles make this a shared activity rather than simply a sequence of buildings to pass. You can keep the outing focused on discovery, enjoying the route while giving each member of the group a chance to suggest an answer or spot something interesting.

How do the other Alkmaar adventures differ?

Sherlock Holmes murder mystery in Alkmaar follows a detective case with stops including Wildemanshofje, De Waag, Grote Sint-Laurenskerk and De Molen van Piet, in that order. The Alkmaar Syndicate (outdoor escape game) pursues Magnus and stolen formulas instead. Its route includes Canadaplein, Grote Sint-Laurenskerk, Hofje van Splinter and Hof van Sonoy. Both give the walk a story to work through, but the detective investigation and outdoor mission have different premises. Choose the one your companions want to discuss, or select Secrets for discovery and photo tasks. Following one game at a time gives everyone a clear adventure to share throughout the outing.

What should your group arrange before playing?

Each Alkmaar game uses the free Loquiz app and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The price is €19.95 per team. Secrets and Sherlock Holmes allow up to four players on one phone, while the Syndicate allows up to five. You can start daily at a flexible time, and the purchase is valid for 12 months. Decide on the game with your group size in mind, then choose a suitable moment for the walk. Sharing the screen and reading prompts together lets everyone follow the story. You can also change who reads and who proposes the first answer, keeping the decisions open to the whole group.
