Track Magnus and the stolen formulas through Arnhem on foot, from the Kerkplein by the Eusebiuskerk to the Sint Walburgisplein.

The formulas are gone, Magnus took them, and the last place anyone saw him was Arnhem. That is as much as anyone can tell you.

It is a city escape game that uses Arnhem itself as the board, played on your own phone and at whatever pace you set. The Loquiz app tracks where you are and hands you what belongs to that spot — a riddle, a code to break, a photograph to go and take. Everyone in the group plays a character with something to contribute, which is the part that keeps the whole group busy instead of one person.

Expect Eusebiuskerk, St. Walburgiskerk and Duivelshuis along the way, among others. What you need is never in the app — it is at the location, and it rewards anyone who actually stops to look.

Other stops include Jansplein and Sabelspoort — enough of them that the group ends up arguing about answers rather than asking what to do.

An Outdoor Escape Room Alternative in Arnhem

Take the part of an escape room you actually enjoy — the ciphers, the logic, the moment it clicks — and put it on the streets of Arnhem. You cover 3 to 4 km on foot over two hours, nobody is locked in anywhere, and no facilitator is rationing hints or resetting anything for the next group. Stuck on something? Keep walking with it.

A Team Building Escape Game You Can Organise in Arnhem Today

This one takes about a minute to organise: buy one ticket per team of up to five people, get the link, and let the teams start whenever they want within 12 months. There is no room to book, nobody to hire and no schedule to hold everyone to — the case, the route and the puzzles are already built around Arnhem, and it runs about two hours over 3 to 4 km on foot. One ticket covers a group of two to five people on a single phone for €19.95, so a department of twenty is four tickets and four teams racing the same case. If you have been asked for company outing ideas and would rather not book another restaurant, this is the version where somebody else did the work.

A Heist Game for Groups of Almost Any Shape in Arnhem

Families. From roughly eight years old it lands properly, and the 3 to 4 km is an ordinary afternoon's walking. The youngest player is reliably the one who notices the thing on the wall, and cracking the codes is a joint effort.

Teams. A team building escape game that needs no facilitator, no room booking and no scheduled start. Buy one ticket per five people, send the teams into Arnhem on the same case, and compare who cracked what. Running several groups at once is what turns it into a competition, and it is the reason this works as a company outing rather than just an afternoon out.

Friends. The characters are what make it work with friends: everyone has a part in the mission and therefore something to argue about. A stolen set of formulas, a city to comb through, and no guide anywhere in sight.

Couples and pairs. Two people can run the whole thing on one phone for €19.95. No group to join, no guide, no fixed departure — you set the pace and stop wherever you want.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Syndicate city escape game work?

It runs in the Loquiz app on your own phone. After booking you get a link, the ticket is valid for 12 months, and you walk to the starting point in Arnhem at any time within that 12 months. The game picks you up from your position. Each location has one thing to crack, and each thing cracked unlocks the next location, all the way to Magnus.

What is the story?

Magnus has stolen the formulas and you have to get them back before he disappears with them. Everyone in your group takes a character with their own part in the mission, which is what makes it a role-playing game rather than a list of puzzles.

Is this an escape room?

No. No room, no door, no host watching a monitor. What you get instead is an outdoor escape game on the open street, with the puzzle logic of an escape room and none of the ceiling.

How long does it take?

It runs about two hours, covering 3 to 4 km on foot. There is no time limit. You pick a date when booking, the ticket is valid for 12 months, and then you begin whenever suits you on any day within that period, so a slow group simply takes longer.

How many people can play on one ticket?

Two to five players share a single phone on one €19.95 ticket. More than five and you take a second ticket — which is the better arrangement anyway, since two groups on the same case can race.

Is it hard?

Intermediate. You need to look properly and think sideways; you do not need to know the city, and no puzzle is built to defeat you permanently.

Is it suitable for children?

From roughly eight upwards, yes. The distance is no obstacle, the photo tasks are where younger players get ahead, and the detail that unlocks a stop is frequently spotted by the smallest person there.

Do we need to pick a date when booking?

You pick a date when booking; the ticket is valid for 12 months from that date. You can start on any day within those 12 months, whenever you like. There is nowhere to assemble, nobody guiding and no group to catch up with.

What happens if it rains?

You decide when to play and you can pause whenever you like. If a shower comes over, step inside somewhere, wait it out and pick up where you left off — nothing is counting down while you wait.

What size group does it work with?

Two to five people share one phone on a single ticket, so two is the smallest group. If you would rather have a murder to solve or a scavenger hunt than a heist, the other city games in Arnhem cover that.

I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

This was a fun game! It had a few challenges which was good and surprises. It got me to go around and explore Queenstown, New Zealand. I got to places in Queenstown, New Zealand I hadn’t been to before while on holiday here. Thank you for that and it gave a feel what it would be like to be the actual Sherlock Holmes!
