Take a self-guided walking tour of Hellevoetsluis with puzzles and photo tasks around its fort, harbour, mill and coastal battery.

Secrets of Hellevoetsluis is a self-guided scavenger hunt you play on your own phone, at your own pace, with the streets themselves as the board.

Because it is GPS-based, the game always knows which corner you are on and gives you that corner's riddle, puzzle or photograph. The answers are never on the phone; they are out in Hellevoetsluis, in front of anyone who bothers to look. What sticks afterwards is the part nobody tells you on a tour.

Expect Molen De Hoop, Standbeeld van Jan Blanken and Nationaal Brandweermuseum on the route. Most of what you need is not at the stops at all but on the way to them, and it rewards anyone who slows down.

Other stops include Ramtorenschip "Buffel" and Jan Blanken Droogdok — enough of them that the group ends up arguing about answers rather than asking what to do next.

A Self-Guided Walking Tour of Hellevoetsluis, With Riddles Instead of a Guide

It delivers what a walking tour delivers — a proper route through Hellevoetsluis, and the story behind the thing in front of you — and removes the two parts people put up with: the commentary and the waiting. Here you walk, you look, you work it out. At intermediate difficulty most groups get most of it and disagree happily about the remainder. There are riddles, there is code-breaking, and there are photographs you would never have thought to take.

Looking for a Scavenger Hunt to Do in Hellevoetsluis?

This is one, already built. Setting it up is a date and a link: book, download the Loquiz app, begin when you feel like it. Nothing gets printed, nothing gets hidden beforehand and no list gets written, because the route through Hellevoetsluis, the riddles and the photo tasks all exist — about two hours over 3 to 4 km on foot. One ticket is €19.95 and covers up to four people on one phone. It is the same evening you were going to spend writing clues, spent walking instead.

A Scavenger Hunt for Adults, Teams and Families in Hellevoetsluis

Adults. As a scavenger hunt for adults it has real bite — this is not a printable list of things to spot. The difficulty is intermediate, the riddles reward looking at what is in front of you, and the two hours hold up for a group that came to be entertained.

Teams. A corporate scavenger hunt that needs no facilitator, no room booking and no scheduled start. Buy one ticket per four people, send the teams into Hellevoetsluis on the same route, and compare who found what. Running several groups at once is what turns it into a competition.

Families. Children walk it without trouble and are usually the fastest at the photo tasks. The riddles are the part you solve together, which is what makes it work for a group with a wide spread of ages.

Couples and friends. A self guided tour with nobody to follow and nothing to keep up with. You choose the pace and the stops, and you come away with facts about Hellevoetsluis that would surprise a local.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Secrets exploration game work?

It runs in the Loquiz app. After booking you get a link, walk to the starting point in Hellevoetsluis and begin. The game reads your location, gives you that spot's riddle, puzzle or photo task, and unlocks the next one when you have it.

Is this a walking tour or a game?

Both, deliberately. On distance and route it is a walking tour of Hellevoetsluis; on content it is a puzzle. The history arrives through the riddles rather than through a guide, and there is nobody to follow.

What do we need to bring?

A phone with battery and shoes that handle 3 to 4 km. You get a link when you book and open the game in the Loquiz app when you get there — no printing, no hiding things in advance, no kit to collect from anyone.

How long does it take?

Roughly two hours across 3 to 4 km of walking. Nothing counts down. The date is set at booking and the hour is yours, so a group that stops for lunch just finishes later.

How many people can play on one ticket?

€19.95 buys one ticket, one phone and one to four people around it. Larger groups split across two tickets and end up competing, which most of them prefer.

Is it hard?

Intermediate. Observation and sideways thinking do the work; you do not need to know the city, and nothing on the route is built to stop you permanently.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. Children manage the 3 to 4 km easily and are usually the quickest at the photo tasks. The riddles are intermediate, so most families work through them together — which is how the game is meant to be played anyway.

Do we need to book a time?

No. You choose a date when booking, then start at whatever time you like on that date. There is no meeting point, no guide and no group to join.

What happens if it rains?

You play when it suits you and stop when it suits you, so a shower just means a coffee. No timer is running, and the route is exactly where you left it.

Will we actually learn something about Hellevoetsluis?

That is the point of this one. The riddles are built on the history, the characters and the odd details of Hellevoetsluis, so you finish knowing things most visitors never find out. Everything practical, starting point included, is on the Hellevoetsluis page.

I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

This was a fun game! It had a few challenges which was good and surprises. It got me to go around and explore Queenstown, New Zealand. I got to places in Queenstown, New Zealand I hadn’t been to before while on holiday here. Thank you for that and it gave a feel what it would be like to be the actual Sherlock Holmes!
