Kennedyplatz Essen: walk and solve

City games in Essen (3) ↓

Kennedyplatz Essen brings an open square into a walk through the city centre. A game can connect that stop with churches, streets and a story for your own group to follow. Choose exploration with puzzles and photo tasks or an outdoor escape pursuit, then use the square as a moment to look around before carrying on through Essen together.

I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

How does Kennedyplatz change the pace of a walk?

Kennedyplatz is a square in central Essen where you can take in the surrounding city during your game outing. A square gives you a broader view than a street, so it is worth pausing before returning to the phone. Let everyone notice something about the setting, then pick up the activity again when the group is ready. This makes the walk a combination of shared play and sightseeing. You do not have to turn every place into another task: the game already supplies an activity, and your own curiosity can guide what you pay attention to between its decisions.

Which Essen games include the square?

Secrets of Essen and The Essen Syndicate (outdoor escape game) both pass Kennedyplatz. The exploration game starts on Burgplatz and guides you through the centre with puzzles and photo tasks. You see Kreuzeskirche, Jahrhundertbrunnen and Alte Synagoge on its route. The outdoor escape game follows Magnus and stolen formulas from Burgplatz past Essener Dom and Kettwiger Straße to Kennedyplatz. The square is therefore part of two different kinds of outing. Choose the exploration activity for its mixture of tasks, or the pursuit for an outdoor escape story that your companions can follow and discuss together through the streets.

What should your team plan before playing?

Both Essen games use the free Loquiz app, cost €19.95 per team and last 1.5 to 2 hours. Secrets of Essen allows at most 4 players per team; the outdoor escape game allows at most 5. One phone is used for the team, so choose the device and agree to share ideas as you walk. The self-guided format lets your own group determine the pace around the city. You can start whenever you want, every day, with validity for 12 months. That makes it possible to choose the game first and arrange a suitable outing with friends, family or colleagues afterwards.
