I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

What dark history does Essen have?

Essen grew around an abbey for noble women founded in the 9th century, and its church is now Essen Cathedral on Burgplatz. Its treasury holds the Golden Madonna, one of the oldest surviving statues of Mary in the world.

The city's darker chapters are more recent. The Old Synagogue, built in 1913, was set on fire in November 1938. The building survived and is now a place of remembrance, a stop for quiet thought rather than a scare.

As the home of Krupp, Essen was one of the most heavily bombed cities of the Second World War, and much of the old centre was rebuilt afterwards. We do not tell you invented ghost stories. On an October night, the old church towers between the shopping streets are atmospheric enough.

Halloween Essen: which games can you play?

In Secrets of Essen you start at the Kreuzeskirche, pass the Jahrhundertbrunnen and the Old Synagogue and reach the Marktkirche, with stories and photo tasks along the way.

The Sherlock Holmes murder mystery in Essen is a case you solve on foot, with a story based on Sherlock Holmes. Clues lead you from the Marktkirche past the Lichtburg cinema to Weberplatz and the Rathaus Essen.

The Essen Syndicate (outdoor escape game) is an outdoor alternative to an escape room for 2 to 5 players. You chase the gang from Burgplatz past the cathedral and along Kettwiger Straße to Kennedyplatz. After dark, the lit-up shop windows and quiet side streets make the chase feel like a thriller.

How much does it cost and how does it work?

Every game costs €19.95 per team. A team plays on one phone, with at most 4 players for the puzzle walk and the murder mystery, and 2 to 5 players for the Syndicate. You play in the free Loquiz app, and a game takes 1.5 to 2 hours.

You can start any day, at any time, and your ticket is valid for 12 months. All Saints' Day on 1 November is a public holiday in North Rhine-Westphalia, so it is a good day for an afternoon or evening walk with friends, family or colleagues.
