I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

What dark history does Charleroi have?

Charleroi's darkest story is a true one: the Bois du Cazier mining disaster of 8 August 1956, when a fire underground killed 262 miners, many of them Italian. The former mine is now a memorial site, and it is one of the places on the route of our game.

The city itself began as a fortress in 1666, named after the Spanish king Charles II, which is why you start near Place Charles II. Around it rose the slag heaps and factories of the Pays Noir. On a grey late-October evening, with the belfry lit up and the wind coming over the old industrial land, Charleroi feels serious and a little haunting without any need for made-up ghosts.

How is Halloween celebrated in Charleroi?

Halloween is not an old Belgian tradition, but in recent years children dress up, shops sell pumpkins and many people look for something spooky to do around 31 October. The older custom comes the next day: 1 November, All Saints' Day, is a public holiday in Belgium, and families visit the graves of their loved ones with chrysanthemums.

That mix of fun and remembrance suits Charleroi well. You can spend halloween Charleroi style with a group of friends or family, walking through the dark autumn streets with a mystery to solve, and finish in a warm café once the case is closed.
