Halloween Ostend: masks, skeletons and the sea in Ensor's town

City games in Ostend (1) ↓

Few places suit halloween Ostend style as well as the town of James Ensor, the painter of masks and skeletons. In late October the seafront is windy and dark early, and the streets behind it are quiet. With your phone and up to three friends you solve a detective case on foot, at your own pace.

I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

Why is Ostend a good Halloween town?

James Ensor lived almost his whole life in Ostend, and his paintings are full of masks, skeletons and grinning crowds. Works such as Skeletons Fighting over a Pickled Herring could hang in any Halloween exhibition. His house, the first stop on our route, still has the shell and souvenir shop on the ground floor where his family sold masks to tourists.

Ostend also has the Bal du Rat Mort, the Dead Rat Ball, a masked ball that Ensor and his friends helped start in the 1890s. Add the grey North Sea, the long history of fishermen lost at sea and the early autumn dark, and the town needs no invented ghosts.

How is Halloween celebrated in Ostend?

Halloween is a newer custom in Belgium: children dress up, pumpkins appear and many people look for something spooky to do around 31 October. The older tradition comes the day after. All Saints' Day on 1 November is a public holiday, and families bring chrysanthemums to the graves of their relatives.

For halloween Ostend is an easy trip on that long weekend. Walk the seafront at dusk, play a detective case through the centre with your family or friends, and warm up afterwards with fish soup or a drink.
