Halloween Marseille: plague, prisons and the old port at dusk

City games in Marseille (3) ↓

A halloween Marseille evening does not need costumes: the city's own history is dark enough. With a City Game on your own phone you walk from the old port into the old quarters, solving riddles and photo tasks as a team. You start whenever you like and play for 1.5–2 hours. As the autumn light drops over the harbour, Marseille's stories of plague, prisons and war feel very close.

I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

What dark history does Marseille have?

Marseille's darkest chapter is the plague of 1720, which arrived on a ship and killed a large part of the city's population. Bodies lay in the streets for weeks before they could be buried.

La Vieille Charité was built as a poorhouse where the poor of the city were confined. Out in the bay, the Château d'If was a prison, and Alexandre Dumas made it famous by locking up his hero in The Count of Monte Cristo.

A more recent scar is remembered at the Mémorial de la Déportation: in 1943 the occupying forces drove out the residents of the old quarter by the port, deported many of them and blew up the streets.

Sherlock Holmes murder mystery in Marseille is a detective case with a story based on Sherlock Holmes. On the way you see the Mucem, the boat landing for the Château d'If and the Cathédrale La Major.

The Marseille Syndicate (outdoor escape game) is an outdoor alternative to an escape room for 2 to 5 players: you chase Magnus past the Église Saint-Charles to the Vieux-Port and the mirrored Ombrière de Norman Foster. All three games use the free Loquiz app.

How is Halloween celebrated in Marseille?
