I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

Which legend is told about Kinderdijk?

Kinderdijk owes its name to a story from a night of disaster. During the Saint Elizabeth flood of 1421 large parts of this region disappeared under water. According to the legend, a wooden cradle drifted onto the dike after the storm. Inside lay a baby, kept safe by a cat that jumped from side to side to keep the cradle balanced. The place has been called the children's dike ever since.

Whether it really happened nobody knows, but the fear behind it was real. Living here meant fighting the water day and night, and the mills you see today were built to keep the polders dry. On a misty October evening, that battle feels very close.

What do you see on the Secrets of Kinderdijk walk?

Secrets of Kinderdijk takes you along the Lekdijk, past the Nederwaard mills and on to the Wisboomgemaal, the pumping station that took over part of the mills' work. On the way you solve puzzles and do photo tasks that make you look closely at sails, sluices and water levels.

The mills are on the UNESCO World Heritage list, yet most visitors only take a photo and leave. With the game you learn how the whole system works. It takes 1.5–2 hours and runs in the free Loquiz app on one phone per team. As the light fades, the mills turn into dark shapes against the sky, which makes it a fine halloween Kinderdijk walk for families, friends and couples.

Is Halloween celebrated in Kinderdijk?

Kinderdijk is a quiet place, not a party spot. Halloween is a fairly new custom in the Netherlands, mostly carved pumpkins, costumes and children going door to door in some neighbourhoods, while the older autumn tradition is Sint-Maarten on 11 November with lanterns and songs.

Our ghost game, Ghost Hunters, is coming to Kinderdijk. Leave your e-mail address on this page and we will let you know when it starts. Until then, an autumn walk through the polder with Secrets of Kinderdijk is a calm but slightly eerie way to mark the season.

What does Secrets of Kinderdijk cost?

€19.95 per team: one phone, at most 4 players. The code HALLOWEEN50 gives 50% off all our games until 2 November.
