I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

What can you see at the Sint-Martinusbasiliek?
The Sint-Martinusbasiliek is a Gothic church close to the river Maas, in the oldest part of Venlo. Start by looking up: the tower is one of the city's landmarks and holds a carillon, so you may hear the bells play while you cross the square.
The church was badly damaged in the Second World War and rebuilt afterwards, which is why old and newer brickwork sit side by side on the outside. The square around it is a good place to pause after the busy shopping streets. Take a slow walk around the building: every side shows you something different, from the tower to the details along the walls.

Which games pass the basilica in Venlo?
The Sherlock Holmes murder mystery in Venlo has the Sint-Martinusbasiliek on its route. On the way you walk from the Koninginneplein past the Museum van Bommel van Dam, the old Hoofdpostkantoor Keulse Poort and the Heilig Hartbeeld. You solve a detective murder case on foot, and you play in the browser on your own phone, no app needed.
The Venlo Syndicate (outdoor escape game) is an outdoor alternative to an escape room. You hunt down Magnus and the stolen formulas, from the Grote Kerkstraat to the basilica. Along the way you pass the Sint-Joriskerk, the Stadhuis Venlo, the Stadsmuur De Luif Venlo and Het Romerhuis. This game runs in a free app on your own phone.
Why is a city game a fun way to see the church?
A city game makes you look at a building differently. A riddle or photo task sends you searching for details you would otherwise walk past, so the Sint-Martinusbasiliek Venlo becomes more than a quick snapshot.
You set your own pace. Each game takes 1.5 to 2 hours and costs €19.95 per team with one phone. The murder mystery takes at most 4 players per team, The Venlo Syndicate 2 to 5 players. You can start whenever you want, every day, and your ticket stays valid for 12 months. That makes it an easy outing for friends, families, colleagues or a couple who want to see Venlo in a new way.
