I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

What dark history does Bruges hide?

Bruges has one story every local knows. In 1488 the citizens held Maximilian of Austria captive in a house on the Markt and beheaded his adviser Pieter Lanchals. According to the legend, Maximilian later punished the city by ordering it to keep swans on its canals forever, because Lanchals had a swan in his coat of arms. Look at the swans on the water tonight and you see a reminder of that execution.

In 1892 the writer Georges Rodenbach called the city Bruges-la-Morte, Bruges the dead city, in a novel about a widower drifting through grey, silent streets. That image of still water, church bells and fog has stuck ever since. And the Torture Museum Oude Steen sits in one of the city's oldest prison buildings, a fitting stop for a Halloween walk.

Which games can you play in Bruges this Halloween?

You can choose from two games in Bruges, each taking 1.5 to 2 hours. Secrets of Bruges starts on the Markt under the Belfort, takes you past Gallery XPO Salvador Dalí and the old Stadhuis, and leads on to the Basilica of the Holy Blood. You play it in the browser on your own phone, no app needed.

The Sherlock Holmes murder mystery in Bruges is a detective story based on Sherlock Holmes. Your route runs past the Torture Museum Oude Steen and the statue of Simon Stevin, then via the basilica to Rozenhoedkaai, where the canal view is at its most haunting after sunset. This game runs in the free Loquiz app.

Both games cost €19.95 per team, with at most 4 players per team on one phone.

How is Halloween celebrated in Bruges?

Halloween is not an old Flemish tradition, though costumes and carved pumpkins have become more common in recent years. The days that really matter here are All Saints' Day on 1 November, a public holiday in Belgium, and All Souls' Day after it, when many families visit graves with chrysanthemums. That makes halloween Bruges a calm, atmospheric time rather than a loud party.
