I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

What dark history does Groningen have?

Groningen's darker stories are written in its stones rather than in ghost tales. The Martini Tower, which locals call the Olle Grieze, the old grey one, has watched over the Grote Markt for centuries and saw the city survive the siege of 1672.

The north side of the Grote Markt went up in flames during the fighting in April 1945, which is why old and newer buildings stand side by side there today. Walk the square on a misty October night, with the tower lit above you and the narrow streets around the Martinikerkhof going quiet, and you feel how much this city has lived through.

How is Halloween celebrated in Groningen?

Halloween is not an old Dutch tradition, but in a student city like Groningen you will see carved pumpkins, costume parties and plenty of people out on the last evening of October. The older local custom comes a little later: on Sint-Maarten, the feast of the saint the Martini Tower is named after, children go door to door with paper lanterns and sing for sweets.

That mix makes the end of autumn a good time to be out on foot. The evenings are dark early, the canals reflect the street lights, and a walking game gives your group a reason to explore instead of staying in.

Which City Game can you play around Halloween?

Secrets of Groningen takes you from the Martini Tower past the Prinsentuin and Forum Groningen to the Grote Markt and the Vismarkt, with puzzles all along the way. Sherlock Holmes murder mystery in Groningen is a detective story based on Sherlock Holmes that passes the Der Aa-kerk and the University Museum.

For a tense evening, The Groningen Syndicate (outdoor escape game) has you chase stolen formulas past the Stadhuis Groningen and the Martinikerkhof: an outdoor alternative to an escape room for 2 to 5 players. Each game takes 1.5 to 2 hours, costs €19.95 per team and runs in the free Loquiz app.

Our ghost game Ghost Hunters is coming to Groningen. Leave your e-mail address on this page and we will let you know when it starts.

Each game costs €19.95 per team: one phone, at most 4 players. The Syndicate is for 2 to 5 players. With the code HALLOWEEN50 you get 50% off all our games until 2 November.

Can we play in the dark?

Yes. You start whenever you like, every day, so an evening walk on 31 October is fine. The route goes through the lit streets of the centre.

Do we need to download anything?

The Groningen games run in the free Loquiz app on your own phone. There is no guide; you play at your own pace.
