The Nationale Opera & Ballet (Stopera) Amsterdam is the large modern building on Waterlooplein, right on the Amstel, where the city hall and the national opera and ballet share one roof. It is also where our Ghost Hunters in Amsterdam city game begins. You and your team play on your own phone in the browser, solve riddles and photo tasks, and walk from the opera into the old streets around Rembrandt's house.

I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

What is the Stopera in Amsterdam?

The Stopera is the building that houses both Amsterdam's city hall and the Nationale Opera & Ballet, the home stage of the Dutch National Opera and the Dutch National Ballet. Its nickname joins the two halves together: stadhuis and opera.

The name has a second meaning that locals still enjoy. When the plans were made, many Amsterdammers protested against building an opera house here, and "Stop de Opera" became a slogan. Today the curved white facade along the Amstel is a familiar sight, with the busy Waterlooplein market on one side and the water on the other.

What can you see at the Nationale Opera & Ballet?

Even from outside, the Stopera Amsterdam is worth a short stop. The building stands on the spot where the Amstel meets the old Jewish quarter, so you see river boats, the market stalls of Waterlooplein and the edge of the canal ring all in one view.

Inside the public passage under the city hall you can find a display about NAP, the Amsterdam water level that the Netherlands uses to measure heights, together with water columns that show how high the sea has risen in past floods. It shows in a simple way how much of the country lies below sea level.

Which City Game passes the Nationale Opera & Ballet (Stopera) Amsterdam?

Ghost Hunters in Amsterdam starts right here. The story: Rembrandt's ghost haunts the Amsterdam opera, and you join the night-shift ghost hunters to follow his trail with your team. From the Nationale Opera & Ballet you walk to the Rembrandthuis, where the painter lived and worked, then on past the tall tower of the Zuiderkerk and the Huis aan de Drie Grachten, a house with water on three sides, towards the Heilige Stede on the Rokin.

The game takes 1.5–2 hours and costs €19.95 per team: one phone, at most 4 players. You play in the browser on your own phone, no app, and you start whenever you want.

Why play a game to see the Stopera?

A city game turns a walk past the Stopera Amsterdam into something you do together. Instead of reading a guidebook, you look for details on facades, answer questions and take photos on the way, so you notice far more of the buildings around Waterlooplein. It suits friends, couples, families with older children and colleagues on a team outing, and you set your own pace with breaks whenever you like. When you finish near the Rokin, you are close to Dam Square and the shopping streets.
