I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

Which story can four friends explore together?

Secrets of Haarlem asks you to help Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer recover her spear. The route takes you past Hoofdwacht, Frans Hals Museum and Gedempte Voldersgracht. At most four players share a phone, playing in the browser with no app needed. Friends can discuss the story as they guide themselves through the city.

Sherlock Holmes murder mystery in Haarlem follows a case from Grote Markt past St Bavo to Teylers Museum. It also allows four players per team but uses the free Loquiz app. Choose this option when your group would rather investigate a mystery. Decide on the game before assigning friends, then prepare a phone for every team joining the activity.

Where does the five-player outdoor story begin?

The Haarlem Syndicate (outdoor escape game) starts on Grote Markt beside Grote of Sint-Bavokerk, following Magnus and the stolen formulas. The route also passes Teylers Museum. Up to five players share one phone using the free Loquiz app, guiding themselves through the outdoor activity at their own pace.

A bachelor or bachelorette group can use this team limit to organise friends into smaller groups. Everyone can suggest ideas while one person handles the screen, keeping the story a shared experience. Choose it when an outdoor chase sounds like the right opening to your celebration. Keep competition between teams relaxed, and make sure each team has its own phone ready before you gather to begin.

What do we budget and how flexible is the start?

Each Haarlem game takes 1.5 to 2 hours and costs €19.95 per team. Work out the team count using four players as the limit for the spear story or detective game, and five for the outdoor escape option. Every team needs one phone, so larger parties require several bookings and devices.

You may start whenever you want on any day, and the booking stays valid for 12 months. Choose a story, arrange the teams and check its phone setup before meeting. Agree a start together and leave sufficient room for the walk in your day's plans. There is no guide setting the departure for these self-guided games, so your friends organise their own beginning.

Can we choose a game without an app?

Secrets of Haarlem runs in the browser on your own phone, with no app needed.

Who features in the spear story?

In Secrets of Haarlem, you help Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer recover her spear.

Can a bachelorette group take part?

Yes. Bachelor and bachelorette groups can play in small teams with friendly competition.

Which game allows five people on a team?

The Haarlem Syndicate (outdoor escape game) allows at most five players per team on one phone.
