Corrie ten Boomhuis Haarlem: an ordinary shop, a remarkable story

City games in Haarlem (3) ↓

The Corrie ten Boomhuis Haarlem stands in a narrow shopping street just off the Grote Markt and looks, from outside, like an ordinary watchmaker's shop. That is exactly what makes its story so moving. During the Second World War, the Ten Boom family hid people who were being hunted here. Two City Game routes pass the house, so you see it while you solve riddles and photo tasks on your own phone, at your own pace.

I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

What is the Corrie ten Boom House?

The Corrie ten Boom House was the home and watch shop of the Ten Boom family, and it is now a museum about their resistance work during the war. Casper ten Boom and his daughters Corrie and Betsie took in Jewish people and members of the resistance. Behind a false wall in Corrie's bedroom was a small hiding place.

In 1944 the police raided the house. The family was arrested, but the people in the hiding place were not found. Corrie survived the camp and later told the story in her book The Hiding Place, which became known around the world. Standing outside, you see a plain front in a busy street. That contrast between the ordinary outside and what happened inside stays with you as you walk on.

Which City Game routes pass the Corrie ten Boomhuis?

Two games pass the house: Secrets of Haarlem and Sherlock Holmes murder mystery in Haarlem. Both take 1.5 to 2 hours and you play them in the browser on your own phone, no app needed.

In Secrets of Haarlem you help Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer recover the spear that became Haarlem's courage. You start through the Kruispoort city gate, pass the Hofje van Oorschot almshouse garden, reach the Corrie ten Boomhuis and walk on to the Stadhuis van Haarlem, the old town hall.

Sherlock Holmes murder mystery in Haarlem is a detective case. It begins on the Grote Markt, brings you to the Corrie ten Boom House early on, and then follows the trail to the Janskerk and the Waalse Kerk.

How does it work and who is it for?

You play as a team on one phone: €19.95 per team, with at most 4 players. Open the game in your browser and start whenever you like, any day. Your ticket stays valid for 12 months, so you do not have to pick a date in advance.

On the way you get riddles you can only solve by looking closely at facades, statues and small details you would otherwise walk past. Photo tasks add some fun in between. A walk through the centre turns into a puzzle trail with a story, and you remember the Corrie ten Boomhuis Haarlem instead of just passing it. It works well for friends, families, colleagues and couples who want to see Haarlem in a different way.

Do you go inside the Corrie ten Boom House during the game?

No, the game takes you to the house and the tasks are done outside on the street. If you want to see the museum inside, plan that separately.

How long does a City Game in Haarlem take?

Plan on 1.5 to 2 hours. You set your own pace and can stop for coffee whenever you like.

What does it cost?

It costs €19.95 per team. A team plays on one phone with at most 4 players.

Do I need an app?

No, both games run in the browser on your own phone, no app needed.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, you solve the riddles together, so children can join in easily. The story of the Corrie ten Boom House is about the war, so explain it to young children in your own words.
