I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

What is the Vleeshal in Haarlem?

The Vleeshal in Haarlem is a former meat market hall on the Grote Markt, built in an exuberant Dutch Renaissance style. Look up and you see high stepped gables, decorated stonework and ornaments that show how proud the city once was of its trade.

Today the building is used for art exhibitions, but most people simply stop in front of it to take in the facade. It stands at the edge of the busiest square in the city, so it is easy to combine with the Grote of Sint-Bavokerk next door and the cafés around the square.

Which City Game routes pass the Vleeshal?

Two of our games pass the Vleeshal: Sherlock Holmes murder mystery in Haarlem and The Haarlem Syndicate (outdoor escape game). Both begin on the Grote Markt, so the old meat hall is part of your first minutes in the game.

In Sherlock Holmes murder mystery in Haarlem you work a detective case through the centre. From the Grote Markt you head towards the Corrie ten Boomhuis, the Janskerk and the Waalse Kerk, questioning suspects and collecting clues on the way.

In The Haarlem Syndicate you track Magnus and the stolen formulas. You start beside the Grote of Sint-Bavokerk and continue to Teylers Museum and the Gravestenenbrug. It is an outdoor alternative to an escape room: the puzzles are hidden in the streets, not behind a locked door.

Why a city game is a fun way to see the Vleeshal

A city game gives you a reason to look closely. Instead of glancing at the Vleeshal on your way to a terrace, you search the square for details, answer questions and take photos for your team.

You play on your own phone, at your own pace, and you can start whenever you like. Sherlock Holmes murder mystery in Haarlem runs in the browser on your phone, no app needed. The Haarlem Syndicate uses the free Loquiz app. Both take 1.5–2 hours and cost €19.95 per team.

It works for friends, couples, families with older children and colleagues looking for an outing that is a bit more active than a museum visit.
