Halloween Wismar: pirates, Nosferatu and a misty harbour town

City games in Wismar (2) ↓

Halloween Wismar style starts in the old harbour town where, in 1922, scenes of the silent horror film Nosferatu were shot. Brick churches, narrow lanes and the cold wind off the Baltic do the rest. With one of our city games you walk from the Marktplatz past the Alter Schwede and the Wasserkunst, solving riddles on your own phone. Use the code HALLOWEEN50 for 50% off all our games until 2 November.

I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

Why does Wismar feel so spooky in autumn?

Wismar played a part in film history: F. W. Murnau filmed scenes of Nosferatu here, and the old town became the backdrop for one of the first vampire films ever made. Walk across the Marktplatz on a misty evening and you understand why he chose it.

The town also has its pirate legend. Klaus Störtebeker, the most famous pirate of the Baltic and North Sea, is part of local lore, and the Secrets of Wismar game lets you join him on a quest to reunite his crew. Add the huge surviving tower of the Marienkirche and you have a setting made for a dark October walk.

How is Halloween celebrated in Wismar?

As in most of Germany, Halloween in Wismar is a fairly new custom. Children dress up and go from door to door, shops put out pumpkins, and friends look for a plan that is a little different.

A city game suits that well. In late October it gets dark early, so a walk through the old town soon becomes a walk by lamplight. The gabled houses, the fountain of the Wasserkunst and the quiet churchyard turn a halloween Wismar evening into a small adventure. You set your own pace.
