I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

Dark chapters of Salzburg's history

Salzburg was ruled for centuries by prince archbishops, and not all of them ended well. Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who built Mirabell Palace, was overthrown and held prisoner in Fortress Hohensalzburg until his death in 1617.

The city also has a grim chapter from the late 17th century: the Zauberer Jackl trials, in which many poor people, a lot of them young beggars, were accused of witchcraft and executed. Walking past the fortress walls after dark, those stories feel close.

A lighter legend gave locals their nickname, Stierwascher: during a siege, the defenders are said to have painted their last bull a new colour every day, so the enemy believed they still had plenty of food.

How Austria marks the end of October

Halloween in Austria is a fairly new custom: costume parties and children ringing doorbells. The older tradition comes on 1 November, All Saints' Day, a public holiday when families visit graves and light candles, with All Souls' Day following on 2 November.

That makes a halloween Salzburg walk a calm, atmospheric outing rather than a loud one. Autumn mist on the Salzach, church bells and lamplit squares do the work, and the walls of the fortress hill look much older at night than they do in the afternoon sun.

From Residenzplatz to the fortress hill

Sherlock Holmes murder mystery in Salzburg starts near the Mozart statue and leads you on foot through the old town. You pass Residenzplatz and Salzburg Cathedral, look up at Fortress Hohensalzburg and see Mozart's Birthplace and Mirabell Palace along the way, while you question suspects and crack riddles.

The game runs in the browser on your own phone, no app needed. The price is €19.95 per team: one phone, at most 4 players. Use the code HALLOWEEN50 for 50% off all our games, valid until 2 November.
