I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

An old industrial landscape after dark

The Zaanse Schans looks like a peaceful village, but it tells the story of one of the first industrial regions in the world.

Along the Zaan there were once hundreds of windmills, sawing wood, pressing oil and grinding spices and paint. Only a few are left. Many of the wooden houses you see here did not always stand in this spot: from the 1960s onwards they were moved here from elsewhere in the region to save them.

We will not invent ghost stories for this place. But walk past the mills on a late October evening, when the sails creak in the wind and the windows of the old houses stay dark, and the atmosphere does the rest. It is quieter than during the day, and that is the best moment for a Halloween walk.

What you pass on the Secrets of Zaanse Schans route

You begin near the Zaandam Time Museum, home to a large collection of old clocks, and look around its entrance area. From there you walk to the site of the first Albert Heijn store and follow the Zonnewijzerspad, the sundial path. Along the way you look out for a traditional Zaan house sign and other small details that tell you who once lived and worked here.

Every stop has a riddle, a question or a photo task. You decide how fast you go, so you can stop to watch the mills or warm up with a drink halfway.
