I had a fantastic experience with CityGame! The concept is creative, engaging, and a great way to explore a city in a completely new way. The games are well-designed, combining puzzles, storytelling, and adventure so you’re constantly discovering something interesting around every corner. What I especially love is how CityGame turns a normal walk through the city into an interactive experience. It’s perfect for friends, families, or team outings, and it makes sightseeing much more exciting than the usual tours. Everything was easy to use, the challenges were fun and clever, and it really encouraged us to look closer at the city and its hidden details. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a unique and memorable way to explore!

This is an interesting way to conduct a self-guided Amsterdam city tour. It used the GPS on your phone to guide you to stops on a route. There are mini quizzes once you arrive at the stops on the path. The quizzes draw your attention to features in front of you or to a brief history of the place. In many cases, we visited a spot that would not have been obvious as a regular passer by. The tour as a whole was interesting to us as newcomers, but I would have liked more information on many locations we visited - a few links outside of the app for each place would have been helpful. Beyond that, the interface was a bit clunky and sometimes awkward to navigate. We definitely don't regret trying this out and feel like we got our money's worth on the experience.

How we check reviews

What does the game add to your mill outing?

Secrets of Zaanse Schans passes The Zaansche Mill during a walking activity with puzzles and photo tasks. The mill is a named destination to notice, while the game gives your group something to do together between places. Take time to look away from the screen and appreciate where you are. Then return to the next task and compare suggestions instead of leaving one person to organise everything. Passing a mill does not establish an included interior visit, so arrange any independent sightseeing separately. The activity offers a common focus for the group without requiring you to prepare a historical account of each place on the walk.

Which other places belong to the route?

Zaandam Time Museum and Zonnewijzerspad (Sundial Path) are among the named stops in Secrets of Zaanse Schans. With the mill featured here, they provide a setting for an outing through Zaanse Schans. The game's description also frames the walk around windmills, wooden houses and riverside workshops, so the surroundings remain part of the experience between tasks. Follow the game for actual directions rather than building a separate tour from the names. A photo task can give you a different way to engage with the city setting. Let teammates suggest an approach and decide together, keeping the phone as a shared tool instead of a private distraction.

What practical setup does the walk use?

Secrets of Zaanse Schans uses the free Loquiz app and takes 1.5 to 2 hours. It costs €19.95 per team, with at most 4 players sharing one phone. Read the instructions aloud so friends, colleagues or a couple can all follow the same activity without needing separate screens. Give different people a turn to propose the next answer or approach to a photo task. You can start whenever you want, every day, and your game is valid for 12 months. Choose a time that leaves room for the walking and its puzzles, with independent mill or museum visits outside the game's own activity.
